Why derby form is not league form
The standing cliché is that "the form book goes out of the window" in a derby. Clichés are worth testing, and this one has a real mechanism behind it even if the effect is smaller than the cliché implies.
Two things genuinely change in a derby:
- Motivation compresses the gap. The weaker side's effort ceiling rises in a way it does not against mid-table opposition. This is the part everyone means.
- The match becomes more chaotic. Derbies carry more cards, more fouls and more disrupted play. Chaos favours the underdog, because it reduces the number of possessions in which the better team can express being better.
The second is the more interesting one, and it is measurable. You can compare a derby's card and foul counts against each club's season average in the Game Statistics Explorer — the difference is usually visible without any statistical work at all.
What the record actually shows
The all-time balance is on the rivalry page, kept current as matches are played, so it is not repeated here — a head-to-head record that gets updated belongs on the page that updates, not frozen into a blog post.
What the blog post is for is the caveat: a long head-to-head record is a poor predictor of the next meeting. Squads turn over completely every decade, and a tally stretching back thirty years is measuring several different football clubs that happen to share a name and a stadium. It is history, and it is genuinely interesting history — but if you are trying to work out what happens on Saturday, recent form and available players will tell you more than a 30-year ledger.
